How
Crompton Greaves reskilled staff as per business needs during lockdown
With employers looking for
a sharp growth curve, it is important to rethink learning and development
(L&D) at the workplace. Reskilling can be incredibly lucrative for
just about any organisation—but it isn’t as easy as setting up a pipeline and
funnelling as many people through as possible. Satyajit Mohanty, CHRO, Crompton
Greaves Consumer Electricals, believes “Re-skilling is not only a matter of
training employees on specific skills. We often under-estimate the thirst for
development and learning many employees have.” At Crompton Greaves, the
reskilling drive has been on in full swing. The thought struck during the
pandemic, when there was a freeze on hiring and the management decided to carry
out their in-house reskilling drive. Mohanty explained that when they resumed
operations post lifting of lockdown, the management discovered that there had
arisen an overnight need for radically new skills, which the team was ill
prepared for.“For instance, in sales, we realised that managing customers
through telecalling is a skill that will matter a lot in the times to come and
one where we were not prepared for. Hence, we had to work on a war footing to
build capability using a telecalling-led customer management model. This led to
a re-appraisal of not only the basic work content, but also re-assessment of
the supporting environment in terms of infrastructure development, performance
management and reward system.”

NSDC partners with TCS
iON for digital classroom
11,000+ training centres of NSDC will be able to go live with their
classes within a few hours of sharing the user data. The National Skill
Development Corporation (NSDC) has collaborated with TCS iON, in an endeavour
to provide continuous online learning to millions of students across India
during the ongoing pandemic. TCS iON is strategic unit of Tata Consultancy
Services (TCS). This partnership ensures that NSDC’s training partners have
access to the TCS iON Digital Glass Room, which allows them to shift their
classroom vocational skills training online, so that students across India can
access and benefit.
This partnership will enable NSDC’s training partners to continue their
lessons as per their training schedule. The learners will experience no break
in learning as they will be taking lessons under the guidance of professionals
as usual. Skill seekers will be able to participate in various digital
learning-engagement activities and complete the hands-on sessions after the
lockdown is relaxed. Simply put, the work of the trainers and the learners will
continue uninterrupted. According to Manish Kumar, MD, CEO, NSDC, the tie up
with TCS will facilitate innovative methods of promoting skill training. TCS
iON’s Digital Glass Room will allow trainers to deliver lectures, create and
share content, assess performance, evaluate assignments, conduct tests, and
keep a track of the learners’ progress. Through online debates, surveys and
polls, the platform will facilitate collaboration among students and trainers.
With continuous sharing and interaction among trainers and students, there will
be seamless education.
