Jeevika skill development programme to make 6000+ rural, urban youth employable

The 6-month courses will be accessible to underprivileged students, college dropouts and unemployed youth Lotus Petal Foundation’s training & placement programme, Jeevika, is all set to train and place over 6000 rural and urban youth of the country by 2025. Almost 65 per cent of the youth in India are in the working age group, and that is why, the Government of India is committed to equip the workforce with employable skills and knowledge. Gurgaon-based, Lotus Petal Foundation is offering multiple six-month courses at its Dhunela campus with 100 per cent placement. These courses will ensure skill training and employability of the youth in numerous industry roles. The courses are certified by the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and are offered at subsidised costs for students from low- families with free transportation facility to and from the Dhunela campus via bus. According to Kushal Chakravorty, founder, Lotus Petal Foundation, “The Jeevika Skill Development Programme is tailored to the individual’s experience, skills, and career aspirations besides being accessible for people from all backgrounds and communities”. The initiative, according to him, “has been designed to provide exposure and skills to underprivileged students, college dropouts and unemployed youth from across the country by providing short-term vocational training courses with 100% placement opportunities”. The programme is a balanced blend of quality education, skill development and practical application of technical training along with a solid theoretical knowledge base. Internships and apprenticeships are part of the programme along with personality development, making the students confidently bilingual in Hindi and English, proficient in computer literacy, and typically adept at one or more vocational skills.

Akrivia HCM to hire 500+ in engineering, implementation, support functions

The HRMs platform is expanding business internationally across South East Asia. With ambitious plans to expand its business in South East Asia (SEA), Akrivia HCM, the Indian enterprise HRMS platform, is on the lookout for talent. It is all set to hire over 500 people in the engineering, implementation and support functions in 2023. Engineering talent with expertise in full stack development, data engineering, DevOps and other cutting-edge technologies will be preferred by this Visakhapatnam-based startup. The company, which offers multi-country localisations to unite the entire employee lifecycle in-house, has been steadily expanding into Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, UAE, Saudi Arabia, as well as Qatar. Rahul Varma Kalidindi, CEO and co-founder, Akrivia HCM realises that technology is critical for “empowering the HR function to accommodate the shifts” happening in the world of work and in the job market today. Therefore, Akrivia is “consistently re-innovating every module in the Indian HR stack system. We are spreading wings across two new geographies and growing our customer base at a rate of 200 per cent to touch 10 lakh users by the end of 2023”. According to Kalidindi, “20% of the new hires will support India operations, while the remaining will facilitate the company’s growth in international markets”.

TCS won’t lay off, will hire those laid off from startups

It is reported that the IT major will soon announce increments as per its normal practice. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has made it clear that it has no intentions of laying off staff. In fact, the Indian information technology (IT) multinational is all set to focus on grooming talent and is keen to hire those laid off by startups. Milind Lakkad, chief human resources officer, TCS, reportedly indicated that the IT major will soon announce increments as per its normal practice. According to Lakkad, the Company has been hiring cautiously and considers it its responsibility to ensure that the people it hires remain productive for the organisation and keep adding value to it.

Pinnacle Industries announces a women-only recruitment campaign

EvolutioNARI is committed to creating an equivalent opportunities ecosystem in the automotive manufacturing space, with the first hiring drive to begin from 23 to 24 Feb, 2023. Pinnacle Industries has announced the largest women-only recruitment campaign in an attempt to widen the pool of women in the workforce, in the automotive manufacturing sector. Aptly called ‘EvolutioNARI’, the initiative aims to provide a platform for talented and experienced women professionals and engineers, who have been on a sabbatical or career break, to return to active professional life. CapGrid onboards Ruchi Rai Arora as head – HR & admin

Arora is backed by about 15 years of HR experience across sectors, including automobiles, manufacturing, logistics, commodities and design. CapGrid has onboarded Ruchi Rai as head – HR and admin. In this new role, she will manage CapGrid’s strategy and performance culture, policies, processes, talent hiring, people development and retention. Rai began her HR journey with Bridgestone, where she served as assistant manager – HR and admin, from 2003 to 2005. Her responsibilities included manpower planning and managerial recruitment, along with staffing, interviews, on-boarding, contract negotiations and induction programmes.

Krish Shankar to retire on 21 March 2023 after serving as group head – HR for almost 8 years. Come March 2023 and Infosys will have a new group head – human resources. Shaji Mathew will step into the shoes of Krish Shankar, who has been bearing this responsibility since 2015. Mathew has been serving as executive vice president and global head of delivery – banking, financial services, insurance (BFSI), healthcare and life sciences since 2019. His tryst with Infosys began way back in 1992, when he joined as a software engineer – delivery manager. By 2004, he was the divisional manager – insurance healthcare and life sciences. 3. Saema Javed is head HR, India & the Middle East, AIT Worldwide Logistics

Javed moves from Aviva India, where she spent over 10 years, with her last held position being that of deputy vice president – HRBP & total rewards. Saema Javed, former deputy vice president – HRBP & total rewards, Aviva India, has joined AIT Worldwide Logistics as head of HR- India & the Middle East. Armed with a master’s degree in human resource management from Jamia Millia Islamia, Javed began her professional journey as an HR executive with HCL Technologies (infrastructure services division). Based out of Noida, she looked into the employee-relation activities for about 400 employees. She also dealt with the performance management system, attrition management as well as employee retention.

TikTok, Yahoo, GitHub, and Baxter lay off employees

Bytedance owned TikTok, Yahoo, Microsoft-owned GitHub, and medical device manufacturer Baxter lay off employees. On Monday, Bytedance-owned social media app TikTok terminated its entire workforce in India, which consisted of around 40 employees. The India office staff was primarily responsible for the Brazil and Dubai markets.  According to a report by Economic Times, the affected employees will receive up to nine months of severance pay. The move has not been an unexpected one as the platform was banned in India approximately three years ago. Additionally, the employees were informed that February 28 would be their last day and were encouraged to search for other job opportunities. They were also given the reason that restarting operations in India was not going to be feasible due to the government’s stance on Chinese apps A TikTok spokesperson stated, “We have decided to shut down our India remote sales support centre, which was established in late 2020 to assist our global and regional sales teams We greatly value these employees and the impact they have had on our company, and we will provide them with support during this challenging time.” Yahoo; Joining the layoff spree, Yahoo is cutting 20 per cent of its workforce, amounting to 1,600 employees. The decisions is reportedly going to affect half of the company’s advertising technology business. Baxter; Baxter, a medical device manufacturer, has forecast a 2023 profit that is below the expectations of Wall Street and announced that it may cut up to 5 per cent of its worldwide workforce. This has caused the company’s shares to drop to $38.58, the lowest it has been in nearly seven years. GitHub; Microsoft-owned GitHub has revealed that it will be cutting 10 per cent of its workforce by the end of the company’s fiscal year. According to Fortune, the company had approximately 3,000 employees before this announcement. In addition, all of GitHub’s offices will be closed as their leases expire, partly due to low usage, and the company will transition to a primarily remote work model.

Canada’s unemployment rate is 5%; 1.5 lakh jobs created in Jan.

Labour force participation has risen to 65.7%. While experts had predicted that Canada unemployment rate will go up to 5.1 per cent, the country’s economy has done better than expected. It create 1,50,000 jobs in January, with the majority being full-time work. This is way more than was expected. In comparison, December 2022 saw 70,000 jobs being added. The open immigration policy has resulted in growth in population. Students, temporary employees as well as other residents who are not permanent, are getting more jobs. The labour force participation rate has gone up to 65.7 per cent, that is, 0.3 percentage points. This is because, the labour force expanded by 1,53,000, or 0.7 per cent.

Laid-off Googlers get more disappointing news

Apparently, Google has told the laid off employees that there was some error in calculating the number of stocks they would get. As if mass layoffs weren’t bad enough, Google managed to disappoint its laid-off employees yet again. The Company sent them an e-mail that indicated they would probably not get as many stocks as was stated. The tech giant has admitted that there was a calculation error and that the employees will get lesser stocks than were earlier promised.

It’s less expensive to reskill employees than hire new ones: Study

L&D professionals in India say their roles have become more cross-functional and they are working more closely with leaders. 83% of Learning & Development (L&D) professionals agree it’s less expensive to reskill a current employee than hire a new one, according to LinkedIn’s new Workplace Learning Report. 

Amidst an uncertain economic climate where cost controls have taken centre place, this is particularly relevant as more companies are leveraging skills to stay nimble and ensure their workforce is ready to optimise opportunity. Opportunities to enhance skills have also become table stakes for professionals in response to constant change from tech disruption and a volatile job market.

This is reflected in the evolving role of L&D departments within companies; more are being tapped on by C-Suite to help boost growth by building people-centric cultures and deploying skilling programmes. As many as 94% of L&D professionals in India agree that proactively building employee skills will help navigate the evolving future of work and 86% of L&D professionals know what skills their workforce needs now and for the future. 

Communication, software development, SQL, management and Java are amongst the top in-demand skills that are highly sought after by companies in India, reveals the report.

And while continuous disruption has a direct impact on the changing skill demand, LinkedIn’s Workplace Learning Report also points out how 45% of HR leaders say their employees are fatigued from all the change. Inevitably, all these pressures come to bear on HR in unique ways.

Creative Synergies gets Sujendra GS as vice president-HR

GS moves from LTIMindtree where he was leading the BFSI vertical and APAC Geo. Creative Synergies Group, a global digital innovation solution provider, appoints Sujendra GS, vice president, human resources. GS moves from LTIMindtree where he was leading the BFSI vertical and APAC Geo. Welcoming him to their team, Mukesh Gandhi, founder and CEO, Creative Synergies Group, said, “Sujendra’s proficiency in HR transformation interventions, people & succession planning, HR analytics, and engagement frameworks is a welcome addition to our team.” He will be responsible for spearheading people related initiatives for the brand’s business units in India, US, Japan, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK.

Shiza Ansari is new head – HR, Shemaroo Entertainment

With experience across sectors such as power, automobile, consumer goods and infrastructure, Ansari moves from BIC, the stationery company, where she was head of human resources for almost 8 years. Shiza Ansari has been appointed head – HR, Shemaroo Entertainment. Her previous assignment was with BIC, the stationery company, where she was head of human resources for almost eight years, handling HR management, HR transformation, employee relations, culture change, strategy, business strategy, people management as well as compensation and benefitsHer experience spans industries such as consumer goods, automobile, infrastructure and power. An alumna of the Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow, where she studied talent analytics and human resource management, Ansari has worked for Reliance Infrastructure as senior human resource manager from 2004 to 2011, based out of Mumbai. From Reliance, she moved to Volkswagen India as senior HR manager, in 2011. A little less than three years later, she joined Larsen & Toubro as senior HR consultant, based out of Mumbai. A short seven-month stint later, she moved to BIC, where she completed the longest stint of her career.

 

3. Biz2X brings on board Vijay Kumar Jamwal as head, HR

Jamwal  has worked with organisations such as HT Media, Citigroup, GlobalLogic, Impetus and Gartner. Biz2X, a subsidiary of Biz2Credit based in India and the provider of Digital Lending SaaS technology, appoints Vijay Kumar Jamwal as its new head of HR. With a rich experience of 18 years, Jamwal has varied HR leadership experience in industries including information technology, banking, finance, media, education, real estate, research and advisory, and consulting. He is also known for his people-centric approach in developing and expanding organisations. Prior to joining Biz2X, Jamwal  has worked with organisations such as HT Media, Citigroup, GlobalLogic, Impetus and Gartner. He has also provided consulting services to startups, aiding them in constructing HR infrastructure for growth and strengthening leadership skills throughout the organisation. In the new role, Jamwal will oversee the company’s HR operations and drive its human resources and organisational culture initiatives.
