‘Remove present board members and I’ll return’: Ousted CEO, Open AI

Sam Altman was unceremoniously removed from his post by the board during a Google Meet last week, but now investors and employees are pushing for his reinstatement.  Sam Altman, former CEO, OpenAI, who was removed from his post in an unceremonious manner last week has hinted at a return but set a condition for the same. Last week, Altman was removed from the CEO post following which Greg Brockman, co-founder and president, OpenAI, had also departedAltman was asked to leave following a review that indicated that he wasn’t always frank and honest when it came to communicating with the members of the board. The board had apparently lost their confidence in him as a leader. The ouster, during a Google Meet, had come as a total surprise to both Altman and Brockman. Investors, however, are reportedly trying to reinstate both of them and eager to see Altman back in the CEO position. Now Amazon’s Alexa team to see job cuts

The voice-assistant unit will bear the brunt of changing priorities of the business and increased focus on artificial intelligence. It hasn’t been long since Amazon reduced headcount in its music and gaming units. Now, there is to be job cuts in Amazon’s Alexa unit. With Amazon deciding to shift priorities and deciding to concentrate more on generative artificial intelligence (AI), hundreds of employees from its voice-assistant unit may be rendered jobless. The exact number of people to be laid off is yet to be known, although reports say that employees in the US, Canada and India will be affected. Very recently, employees were let go in the music and gaming divisions, as well as the human resources department. The news does not come as a complete shock since there have been indication of Amazon’s devices and services business failing to be profitable. Alexa, the voice assistant could be relied on to set timers, handle search queries, play music, supply jokes and trivia, find a phone, and even serve as a home automation hub. Right now, the company feels it needs to put in maximum efforts on generative AI as that is what matters most to its customers. After all, the technology can not only generate fresh and creative content, but also generate images, code and text from available data. Therefore, Amazon would be able to enhance Alexa’s features and make it even more spontaneous, sharp and supportive by investing in generative AI.

Why L&D is such a big part of success in the logistics industry: Sunjoy Dhaawan of DHL Express India

Changes in the world of work present logistics employees with many emerging unfamiliar concepts. To keep the business healthy, employees must be given proper training and development support. Sunjoy Dhaawan, VP of Human Resources, DHL Express India, provides insights into the pivotal role of learning and development, the ever-changing dynamics of the modern workplace, and the company's forward-looking vision for the future of work. As globalisation supported the growth of economies, the importance of logistics also increased significantly. In my opinion, there is a noticeable distinction between employees from a decade ago and those of today, and I attribute much of this transformation to learning and development. As our work becomes increasingly 'borderless,' modern offices have evolved towards a more agile, connected, and digital workplace to drive collaboration and workplace excellence. In my opinion, hyper-personalised training has been at the forefront of the evolution of learning and development (L&D). As more companies adopt digital workplaces, business trends also change rapidly. Each employee has to learn and unlearn things constantly.

9 SpaceX employees were fired for raising complaints in 2022

The employees were concerned about the safety procedures of the firm, with 600 workers being injured since 2014. On raising complaints in an open letter, nine employees of SpaceX were terminated in 2022. Of these, eight went on to file cases of unfair labour practice against the company with the National Labour Relations Board. Investigations into the matter revealed that over 600 workers had been injured since 2014 at SpaceX plants across the US. Nothing had been made public since data was rarely submitted before 2021. In 2022, the average injury rate at three SpaceX facilities was way more than that of the space industry on the whole, that is, over 0.8 injuries per 100 workers. Nine workers had sustained injuries to their head, while one had suffered traumatic brain injury. As many as 17 workers’ fingers had been crushed, while some had suffered severe injuries to their hands. Some workers reportedly consumed stimulants meant to treat patients with attention-deficit issues, so that they could focus and remain attentive at work. ‘Beware of fraud job offers’: AAI warns public

These fraud job offers were brought to the notice of AAI via several e-mail and social-media complaints. The fraudsters have gone to the extent of providing hopeful candidates with exam dates, some main exam questions for preparation, and even the dates on which the results will be out. The jobs are being offered in exchange for a sum of money. Of course, AAI has clarified this is all wrong information and need not to be believed.

ILO Governing Body sends ‘right to strike’ issue to ICJ

There has been a dispute between employees’ representatives and employers over the right to strike for a long time now. After almost a decade of dispute between employee representatives and employers, over the right to strike, the ILO Governing Body has voted to send the issue to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to be resolved. As per the ILO jurisprudence, the right to strike is based on the international law from ILO Conventions 87 (Freedom of Association) and 98 (Right to Organise and Collective Bargaining). While the representatives of the workers are supportive of the ILO jurisprudence, the employers are not. When such conflicts arise, the ILO Constitution provides for them to be sent to ICJ for resolution. When a vote was held recently, 19 government reps who are part of the Governing Body voted for sending the issue to ICJ. They were joined by 14 worker delegates. Only seven from the employers’ side voted. The general secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation believes that the workers have the fundamental right to strike so that they can bargain for fairness and uphold democracy.

Social-media hate post costs Apple employee her job

The said employee called herself a ‘proud German’ and stated that Jews were “only capable of invasions”. Natasha Dach, employee of Apple, was fired by the tech firm for spewing hatred for Jews on social media. She calls Jews bullies and terrorists who believe in torturing others. Her hate post drew the wrath of #StopAntisemitism — an American non-profit entity that works to combat anti-Semitism — and drove Dach’s employer, Apple, to terminate her employment. Additionally, GM will be paying cost-of-living allowances to workers over  a four-year contract. The wage adjustments will result in a total increase of 30 per cent over the contract’s life. Pay for veteran workers will also go up by 33 per cent and GM will give $2,500 in five instalments to retirees through 2028. To increase pressure on GM to reach an agreement, the Union had extended the strike to bigger plants that accounted for bigger profits. Almost 4,000 workers boycotted work at GM’s largest plant in North America. As per Reuters, local leaders of the UAW will be present in Detroit later this week to finalise the deal with GM, before presenting the terms to all union workers for approval.

Rajasthan HC: Fair hearing required before employee dismissal

The court said it was crucial for the authorities to provide the petitioner with a chance to defend himself before terminating his employment. The Rajasthan High Court recently invalidated a decision made by the State Government, which terminated a Physical Education Teacher (PET) from their position, purportedly due to the submission of a counterfeit sports certificate for employment. This decision was overturned because the teacher in question was not provided with a notice of allegations, and no investigation was carried out against them. The petitioner claimed that they applied for the job of Physical Education Teacher Grade-II in 1998 as per an advertisement. However, the officials didn’t consider the petitioner’s degree as a valid qualification for the job. The petitioner brought the same case earlier to the Rajasthan HC and the court had ordered the officials to re-evaluate the petitioner’s qualifications, including bonus points for a state-level certificate. If the petitioner was found to be qualified, then the officials should consider them for the job, the court ordered on November 18, 2005.
