“The capacity to learn is a
Gift, the ability to learn is a Skill, the willingness to learn is a
choice.”
Learning is an on-going process. It is not limited to
mere four walls of an institute but goes way beyond that. We are not short of
people who have climbed the ladder of success through various difficulties and
challenges that kept unfolding inn their way to success. These iconic people
have a great amount of experience to share with the students who get inspired
from them. We were lucky to have an amazing session with Mr. Satwinder S.
Madhok who shared with us some of the great learning he had from his life. This
report gives you a gist of those learning’s.
GUEST LECTURE IN IES MCRC – 22ND
DECEMBER, 2016
GIST OF INTERACTION
“Skills for a Budding Manager”
Mr. Madhok addressed us about the
requisites for an effective manager in the world that is changing so
drastically. Then sir put a question that arose curiosity.
“Why people stick
together at one place despite cultural variations?”
It’s a point worth pondering
upon. Humans are dynamic in their behaviour, to add to this present complexity,
their emotions make people behave in innumerable ways towards situations,
society, etc.
But this did not happen all of a
sudden, it took a great deal of time for people to learn to work together as
compared to the earlier times we people were comfortable with working alone.
Work itself requires some common
skills that are not common anymore. Things became more complicated, everyone
started welcoming jargons, complications so much that they almost neglect some
simple skills required to become better human being at first and followed by becoming
a better manager.
Later, Mr. Madhok touched on
those issues that are responsible for hampering the progress of a budding
management student from becoming an effective manager.
We were also told to search and seek mentorship from a person opposite to
our gender. Women and men have different ways of viewing the world around them
a girl have a male mentor or vice-versa can help her/him become more open to
the world. It provides a holistic guidance rather than confining oneself with
same thought processes.
Mr. Madhok related to how his mentor had changed him by letting him face
dynamic situations in life. This interaction helped us students to grasp vast
array of knowledge and learn to apply those on themselves.
Skills to be embedded in every Manager
1.
Decision making – this is one of
the most important characteristic of a manager. Firstly making decisions for
oneself, and secondly taking decisions for others. Taking a decision for
oneself and making mistake is permissible however if decisions are not made for
oneself, it would be a blunder. In a nutshell, if one cannot decide for
herself/himself, how can she/ he decide for other?
2.
Clarity in
communication – this becomes a numero uno. Not only does one need to be a
good speaker but she/he needs to be an effective speaker as well so that others
can interpret the communication well. The common issue faced here is the word
fatigue, that is, repetition of words. This repetition results in loss of
interest on the part of the other end of communication like audience,
recipient.
3.
Morals – today we all are
in a hurry to exceed our expectations, achieve our goals that we almost neglect
our morals. In this race of ambition and wants, we fail to give the rightful
meaning to the activities undertaken to achieve success and fail to give
justice to people who are affected by our decisions. Therefore we must give
emphasis to morals as it directs the path of mankind.
“A
Classic Mismatch”
At present the industries faces a
new challenge. The challenge is the availability of educated people who are not
skilled. This is a problem of classic mismatch where we have abundance of
educated people for jobs but the skills of executing these jobs are lacking.
This can be solved by equipping young managers with the help of training and
workshops.
Teaching is the next best profession
Teaching, couching is one of the
best profession at present as everyday 50000 people who attain the age of 18
till the next 19 years. Such a huge number of population needs to be made aware
and trained. This can foster education over the coming period and reaching to
those who remained unaware of it. It is a cycle that creates a value. Education
helps in generating high income which leads to more spending as a result of
which economy progresses.
Additional Requisites of a successful manager
While being a team player,
empowering others to express and execute their work well, are some of the
general requisites, there are other things that needs to be taken care of. One of them is ‘knowing the business’. One should not confine to specific areas/
specialisation but expose to the entire business. Apart from this, the most
important factor/ characteristic is adaptability. A successful manager should adjust herself/himself with the
situations. Here the example of Pharaohs of Egypt was given who couldn’t accept
changes. Being static drained the wealth, they accumulated over the years.
Therefore, one should not be static.
Take responsibility of your team
“If you cannot become a good human, you cannot become a good
manager.”
“It’s not about what you say, it’s about how it’s felt.”
RELEVANCE OF INTERACTION
TO IES STUDENTS IN 2018 AND BEYOND
Accept people the way they are
and do not judge them. Be open to anything and everything.
Absorb the necessary skills
required to become better human beings and a responsible manager.
Own your decisions making rather
than letting others decide for you.
“If you forget history, you repeat history.”
Teaching is an evergreen
opportunity, tap it, spread knowledge and awareness.
Care for the people working
around you, they help you grow instead.
Conclusion
In modern times, we
have come to such a stage where ‘common things’ are not so common anymore. Being a manager is not merely studying or
engaging oneself to a job or work, it’s beyond that. Management is all
pervasive. It exists in the way we execute our day to day activities. A manager
knows to execute the work but a successful one knows how to take his team along
with the completion of work.
We received a
number of mantras to develop ourselves into better managers which instead
requires us to become better human being. First and foremost, everyone should
find one mentor of their field who can guide them through their life. It is
advisable to have a mentor opposite to your gender so that the mentees can have
a holistic view looking at situations. Skills like decision making, clear
communication and morals should equipped by modern managers. There is a classic
mismatch between people who are educated and people who are skilled. This gap
is increasing and there is a need to fill this gap. For people looking to add
value to other’s life besides taking up an job, can look forward for teaching,
it has a huge scope. Other elements of being a successful manager are
adaptability, knowledge of business, empowering subordinates and team’s
participation. Finally, the willingness of the team to perform highly depends
upon how one treats the team, therefore being responsible for them. Give them
the environment to nurture themselves and allow them to share their views to
help the organisation prosper.
