Unisys
upgrades performance-management with right tools, technology and matrices
Modifications in terms of goals, performance
assessment, appraisal cycle, performance-measurement matrices and insurance
cover, helped the Company keep its employees happy and improve productivity. COVID-19
had presented the HR industry with a lot of challenges initially. However, six
months down the line, leaders are in a position to look back with satisfaction
at how these woes were addressed and tackled. Human-resource experts are of the
view that the pandemic has brought to the fore the need to upgrade the
conventional performance-management systems used by companies. Unisys India
introduced some new changes to the existing model owing to COVID-19. Avneet
Hora, senior director and head – HR, Unisys India, informs, “Typically, in our
industry, the performance cycle is annual. At the end of the year, you get
appraised. Therefore, it is either a mid-year or annual evaluation. This April,
we switched this to a quarterly cycle.”
Citing an example of how goals were redefined for a team that supports the
travel and transport industry, Hora reveals that adjustments were made such
that the associates were not penalised and clients’ expectations were also met.
Technology, right tools and proper performance matrices can do the job for the
information technology (IT) industry. Productivity will also depend on how
the employees were looked after during these troubled times. That will create
credibility and a will to be part of an organisation for long. This pandemic
has seen employers go an extra mile to take care of the well-being of their
employees — in terms of sick leaves, financial assistance and more. Unisys has
also introduced a lot of COVID-19 measures to help its employees, one of them
being the insurance policies.

UP to set up employment
commission, guarantee jobs
Through this commission,
one member from each family in the urban / semi-urban areas will get a job in
the government, non-government and private sectors, and will also receive training
and financial assistance to explore self-employment opportunities. The
Government of Uttar Pradesh is thinking of setting up an employment commission
to guarantee a job to at least one member of each family in the urban and
semi-urban areas. This commission will be a permanent statutory / regulatory
body with the deputy chief minister as the chairman. An official of the rank of
chief secretary will be the executive head or employment commissioner of this
body. Transparent hiring will be one of the highlights of the commission. The
training and self-employment programmes being run by various government
departments right now will also come under the new commission. This statutory
body will also help the youth obtain loans from banks to set up units once they
have been given the relevant industry training. The commission will arrange to
hold job fairs in collaboration with the embassies of other countries, to help
youth obtain jobs overseas. The employment commissioner will have the authority
to direct any department, government or private institution related to
employment or skill development. .

65%
employees optimistic about new technology, 32% companies ready for it
The 2021 Global Culture
Report by O.C. Tanner provides new insights into the acceptance and readiness
for new technology by organisations and employees. We
have been misled into believing that employees fear artificial intelligence and
other advanced technologies. The truth is that they willing to welcome it and
are quite eager to embrace it. A study by O.C. Tanner reveals that whatever
fear employees experience is centred around how the organisation implements new
tools or technology. That means, it will be ideal for organisations to weigh
the effect technology will have on employee experience and work culture.
A significant 65 per cent of employees are optimistic about introduction
of new technology, whereas 32 per cent organisations are culturally fit and
ready to embrace new technology. If organisations align technology
implementation to their culture, there is 644 per cent higher chances of
employees feeling successful, 424 per cent higher chances of employee
engagement and 296 per cent more likelihood of increase in revenue.
