Vedanta Aluminium to upgrade skills of 3,500 youth over 3 years

The aluminimum manufacturer’s skill-training centres at Lanjigarh and Bhawanipatna offer training courses for jobs in the areas of food and beverage, hospitality and electrical maintenance. As part of its skilling programmes in Odisha, Vedanta Aluminium aims to upgrade the skills of 3,500 youth over the next three years, in partnership with OSDA and NABARD, around its alumina refinery operations in Lanjigarh in Kalahandi district (Odisha). The Indian producer of aluminium has announced the expansion of its skill-development initiatives across its locations on the occasion of World Youth Skills Day.

Haryana’s IT Saksham Yuva Scheme will employ 5,000 youth

Lori Petersen joins Cipla as VP-HR

Petersen moves from Thermo Fisher Scientific, where she was VP-HR, laboratory chemicals. After a successful five-year long tenure at Thermo Fisher Scientific, Lori Petersen has joined Cipla has vice president-human resources. Having begun her professional journey in 2001, with MRINetwork, as research manager, Petersen comes with over two decades of experience. She served as talent acquisition specialist at CHEP from 2006 to 2008 before moving on to Rolls-Royce in June of 2008.

Sanjay Gawde elevated to head-HR and admin, Mahindra Logistics

Gawde has been with the Mahindra Group since December 2021, earlier handling group rewards and later heading group talent management. Sanjay Gawde has been appointed head-HR and administration and senior management personnel (SMP), Mahindra Logistics, starting 1 October 2024. He will take over from Edwin Lobo who is opting for early retirement. Gawde’s association with the Mahindra Group began in 2021, with him handling group rewards for over two years before heading group talent management in February 2024.

Prior to this, Berry served Digiphoto Entertainment Imaging as its VP and global head-people & culture. Coforge has appointed Ankur Berry as the new global head-HR of Cigniti Technologies, a firm it acquired. In his new role, Berry will oversee the integration of people across the delivery and practice teams of the combined business unit. Leveraging over two decades of experience in global leadership and HR management, Berry will manage the company’s entire HR portfolio and associated functions.

Another video game company decides to restructure, trim team

While Humble Games assures that the business is not being shuttered down, it does admit to deciding to trim its team by 36. Humble Games, the video games publisher, known for popular games such as Slay the Spire, Signalis and Unpacking, has decided to trim its team by 36. The company claims that the decision was taken to ensure that its ongoing projects remained stable and its developers continued to receive the required support for the same. The company, has, however, reportedly assured that the impacted employees, including its development partners will be helped through the transition.

Failure to consider employees for promotion violates their fundamental right: SC

If employees meet the eligibility criteria, they have the right to be considered for promotion said the Supreme Court. While a promotion is not a fundamental right, it is definitely a statutory and a fundamental right of an employee to be considered for a promotion if they fulfil the eligibility criteria. The Supreme Court said that by failing to consider an employee for promotion the employer goes against the employee’s fundamental right.

30% girls enrolled at Tata Motors’ ‘Automotive Skill Labs’

25 labs across India equip over 4000 students from marginalised communities every year with future-ready automotive skills. With an aim to nurture talent and create a skilled workforce for the automotive industry, Tata Motors, in collaboration with Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) has established dedicated Automotive Skill Labs at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas(JNVs). This industry-academic joint initiative equips approximately 4000 students annually with practical automotive skills, with 30 per cent of students enrolled being girls, which is proof of how inclusive its approach is. Till date, 25 fully-equipped labs have been set up across select JNVs in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

FedEx to skill 400 STEM students; address digital skills gap

The express transportation company wishes to address the employability challenges in India. How will FedEx Express skill nearly 400 science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) students? Well, the subsidiary of FedEx Corp, the express transportation company, has teamed up with Magic Bus India Foundation, an NGO, and created an intensive 75-day curriculum. This will be used to upskill youth in leading-edge cloud computing and allied technologies, along with transferable life and employability skills.

Diageo India’s ‘Learning for Life’ programme to train 200 women

The training has been imparted in collaboration with TSL Foundation so that the participants can be employable in the hospitality industry. Diageo India (United Spirits), the alco-bev company, has tied up with TSL Foundation, a new-age CSR consultancy and execution organisation, to train 200 young women under its ‘Learning for Life’ programme, at its training centre in Bhondsi, Gurgaon. The training programme will be conducted in collaboration with the Government of Haryana to build awareness to upskill and empower young women. The initiative is in line with Diageo India’s commitment to championing inclusion and diversity, a key pillar of Diageo’s ‘Society 2030: Spirit of Progress’ goals.

Siddhartha Gupta to lead Mercer India as president; Arvind Laddha moves on

Gupta has been CEO of Mercer Mettle for over 5 years now, having been elevated after almost 3 years as chief revenue officer. Siddhartha Gupta has stepped into the shoes of Arvind Laddha as the president of Mercer India. Till now, Gupta was chief executive officer, Mercer| Mettl. n alumnus of Xavier Institute of Management (XIM) Bhubaneswar, Gupta also holds a postgraduate diploma in marketing management from the Times School of Marketing, and began his professional journey with Compaq Computers. After a year there as executive assistant to the managing director, he was witness to the acquisition of the company by Hewlett Packard (HP). Thereafter, he became account manager at HP, having moved into the southern regional sales team, operating out of Bengaluru.

Tasty Bite Eatables ropes in Vidhu Arora as CHRO

Arora moves from Gap Inc. where her tenure lasted more than 8 years. After a successful eight-year long association with Gap Inc., Vidhu Arora has joined Tasty Bite Eatables as chief human resources officer (CHRO). Arora, an alumna of Amity University from where she completed an MBA in human resources, spent six years with PepsiCo in the initial stages of her career. She started off as a human resource consultant on contract, and two years later joined the company full time, as assistant manager-organisation capability and communication, in 2011. By 2013, she was elevated to unit HR manager-PHHP, UP. Less than two years later, she was again promoted, achieving the position of transformation manager, working on organisational restructuring and design.

Volvo’s Amit Sharma joins Gokaldas Exports as CHRO

In his previous role at Volvo, Sharma was pivotal in providing strategic HR leadership to the Volvo Group in India across legal entities. Amit Sharma, former vice president and head-HR, Volvo Group, India, has joined Gokaldas Exports as its new chief human resources officer. In this new role, Sharma wil drive the business across the globe for Gokaldas Exports and the group companies. He will also play a pivotal role in shaping and streamlining the HR function and ensuring alignment with the company’s strategic objectives.

No service-agreement renewals for 300 Air India contract employees

The affected employees have been with the airline for at least 10 years in various departments. The fitment exercise at Air India, in the build-up to the merger with Vistara, is about to conclude, and about 300 employees may be rendered jobless as a result. Why? Because these employees were working on fixed-term contracts (FTC) with Air India for the past 10 to 15 years but were not able to bag any role during the fitment exercise. Therefore, the airline may not renew their service agreements. These employees are all non-flying staff, as reported by PTI.

CAT Srinagar: Maternity leave applicable even for third child

The authorities denied leave to a teacher, contending that the leave is only permissible for the first two pregnancies of a female government employee. The Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) in Srinagar has upheld the right of a government employee to maternity leave, for a third time. The Court emphasised that maternity leave is an entitlement that applies regardless of whether the expected child would be her third, considering the distinctive circumstances related to her previous employment status. The decision comes in response to a plea by a teacher from the School Education Department (SED) who was initially denied maternity leave. The authorities had contended that maternity leave was only permissible for the first two children of a female government employee.

‘No Work, No Pay’ principle not applicable for reinstated employees: Allahabad HC


The bench clarified that when employees are reinstated without needing further investigation, they should get their full pay and allowances for the period they were not working. In a recent ruling, the Allahabad High Court declared that the principle of “no work, no pay” does not apply to State government employees. The bench in action clarified that this rule applies under Rules 54(2) and 54(4) in Uttar Pradesh. The Court further stated that when employees are reinstated without need for further investigation, they should get their full pay and allowances for the period they were not working. The exact amount depends on whether Rule 54(2) or Rule 54(4) applies to their situation.
